Paul Wants Out Of New Orleans

Just two years ago, the New Orleans Hornets were one game away from advancing to the Western Conference Finals. Led by spectacular G Chris Paul and F David West, the Hornets won the Southwest Division with a 56-26 record and a #2 seed in the Western Conference. They easily dispatched the Dallas Mavericks in the first round, and almost beat the defending champion San Antonio Spurs before succumbing to them in seven games.

That now seems a like a real distant memory, as it now has been reported that Paul wants a trade, particularly to the New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, or the Mavericks. Paul has seen a lot of teams around the NBA get better, while the Hornets have failed to make any significant moves to keep up. F Lebron James' decision to join G Dwyane Wade and F Chris Bosh in Miami has headlined the summer of free agency. Paul is looking to make a move similar to the one James made.

Paul still has two years remaining on his deal. His desire to join the Knicks deals with the fact that they acquired F Amare Stoudemire via free agency and may acquire F Carmelo Anthony during next year's free agency period. Paul is looking to form another "Big Three" that can compete with the one in Miami, as well as compete for a championship.

This shouldn't be news to anyone because Paul announced at Anthony's wedding that himself, Anthony and Stoudemire will be the next "Big Three" in the NBA. Once he announced that, his days in New Orleans were automatically numbered. Unlike James, Paul isn't in control of his fate. The Hornets don't have to trade him, and it's hard to imagine a scenario where they do. Paul is among the top 3 point guards in the NBA, and one of the few players in the league who's very valuable to his team's success.

If Paul were to be traded to the Knicks, it would bring the Knicks back to the success they saw during the 1990s, when they were regulars in the playoffs. However, if Paul were to leave New Orleans, they would probably hate him the same way Cleveland hates James. Paul actually wouldn't be seen as a dark cloud in New Orleans, since their attention is to the Saints and how they'll follow up their championship. The only thing the city of Cleveland had was James, which is why he is hated.

The direction the NBA is headed in right now is not good. All of a sudden, there are stars thinking about joining other major stars to win championships at such a young age. When the Boston Celtics traded for G Ray Allen and F Kevin Garnett, both of those guys, along with F Paul Pierce, were veterans who have experienced failure many times. James is only 25 years old, and Paul is only 25 years old as well. He should be thinking about giving the Hornets a chance to surround themselves with pieces to contend for a championship. However, that may not be the case and the Hornets wouldn't be so bright if they get rid of Paul.

Heat Sign Ilgauskas, Rockets Sign Miller

The Miami Heat have continued on their expedition to fill their roster, signing C Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Ilgauskas has been the fourth center this week to sign with the Heat. C Jamaal Magloire, C Joel Anthony, and rookie C Dexter Pittman all signed deals with the Heat earlier in the week. Ilgauskas spent the past 12 seasons of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After superstar F Lebron James bolted the Cavaliers for the Heat, the unsigned Ilgauskas saw it as a logical fit to join James in Miami.

The Houston Rockets also finalized a deal with C Brad Miller. The deal is reportedly worth $15 million over three years. Miller had numerous teams who were interested in his services. However, he was lured by the fact the Rockets have his former coach Rick Adelman and his former teammate G Kevin Martin on the team. That was enough to entice Miller to choose the Rockets. Miller spent the past season and a half with the Chicago Bulls, which was his second stint with the team after spending two seasons with them from 2000-2002.

The Rockets have acquired a great veteran center who will fit in well because of his knowledge of Adelman's style of play. The Rockets played decent basketball this past season, despite losing C Yao Ming for the season, having an unhealthy G Tracy McGrady, and losing F Ron Artest to free agency. They finished the season with a winning record, and with Ming coming back healthy, along with the addition of Miller, this Rockets team could cause problems in the Western Conference. This all depends on if Ming can stay healthy, something he has not been able to do in the past couple of seasons.

I'm not sure the Heat acquisition of Ilgauskas does anything for that team. Their acquisitions of Pittman, Anthony and Magloire doesn't do much either. This team will be similar to what James and Wade had last year. They both were the superstars on their respective teams with not much help. This time around, however, they have joined forces, along with F Chris Bosh, which definitely significantly increases their chances of winning the championship. That trio is all the Heat needs and they know they can fill the roster with a bunch of D-League players and still get the job done.

Ilgauskas will have no impact on that team, as he hasn't had any impact on the Cavaliers in the past couple of seasons. Magloire hasn't been that good in his NBA career, and Anthony is a young center with limited offensive moves. Wade, James, and Bosh will combine for about three-quarters of the team's total offensive output next season, which is why the other players aren't needed. They are merely taking up space on the team to fill out the roster.

Lebron Chooses Heat

F Lebron James has decided to join forces with G Dwyane Wade and F Chris Bosh with the Miami Heat, apparently taking less money to win a championship. James had an hour special on ESPN where he announced his decision to join the Heat, over the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and Chicago Bulls, among others. It was reported all day that James would be joining the Heat, leaving the Cavaliers hanging dry. However, the Heat's work is just beginning, as they only have four total players on the roster.

The Heat also traded F Michael Beasley to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 2011 NBA Draft pick. All of the other eight players the Heat sign will have to be at minimum contracts, which could be very difficult. This now shifts the balance of power over to Miami, as they instantly have become the team to beat, even if the Los Angeles Lakers have won two straight championships.

There has been criticism from many about how James decided to reveal his decision to sign with the Heat. Many other players, such as G Kobe Bryant, got new contracts or contract extensions the traditional way, with a press conference. James decided to go out of his way to travel to Connecticut and reveal his decision to leave the Cavaliers, which didn't sit well in Cleveland. Everytime the Heat plays the Cavaliers in Cleveland, there will definitely be added security and extra police officers for the protection of James. James now has six years to get as many championships as possible under his new deal.

Knicks, Stoudemire Agree On Terms

F Amare Stoudemire has agreed to a five-year contract worth $100 million to join the New York Knicks yesterday. It was clear that the Knicks were Stoudemire's first choice, as he really only met and talked with the Knicks. The Knicks weren't really courting Stoudemire initially, but his interest in the Knicks was something the Knicks could not turn down. Stoudemire also made headlining comments a couple of days ago when he said Denver Nuggets F Carmelo Anthony and San Antonio Spurs G Tony Parker are ready to join him in New York when they become free agents next year. Stoudemire spent the first eight years of his career with the Phoenix Suns, averaging 21.4 points per game during his time there.

In addition to his personal success, the Suns have been as far as the Western Conference Finals three times in his eight seasons there. However, he has not been able to get them to the NBA Finals, and he'll try to start anew with the Knicks and his old coach Mike D'Antoni. D'Antoni led the Suns to two of the three Western Conference Finals appearances Stoudemire has been involved in. The Knicks signing of Stoudemire could lure another top class free agent over to the Knicks. F Lebron James and G Dwyane Wade are still available on the free agent market.

The Knicks have only made the playoffs once since 2001, and they failed to get a win in that lone playoff appearance. The Knicks have been set back by failed free agent signings, and bad trades. The Knicks had a bunch of overpaid players who didn't contribute much or nothing at all. When Donnie Walsh left the Indiana Pacers to join the Knicks, he made it a goal to get rid of all the bad contracts to have financial flexibility for the 2010 free agency period. He blew up the team during the 2008-2009 season, when the Knicks were playing decent basketball with G Jamal Crawford and F Zach Randolph. He traded both of them in the same week in separate deals, freeing up cap space. It may now pay off for the Knicks and the fans, who haven't seen a championship since 1973.

James, Bosh, Wade Talk About Future

According to sources, F Lebron James, F Chris Bosh, and G Dwyane Wade met in Miami over the weekend to discuss their futures. The possibility of those three teaming up with the Miami Heat was also reportedly discussed. The Heat only have money for two max contract players, but can acquire another one through a sign-and-trade deal. Stephen A. Smith reported on his radio show that the three agreed to join the Heat once the free agency period starts. However, it has been reported that James will still visit other teams and has not committed to leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This only makes it more interesting once July 1 comes, because there are huge names in this free agency market. Wade talked about a meeting between those three and G Joe Johnson last month, but it didn't happen. It was also reported that if there was credible evidence that anyone was discussing their futures together, they could be subject to a fine for tampering. I don't know how commissioner David Stern will approach this situation, because all of this talk is happening before July 1.

It wouldn't make sense for James to join Wade because those are two players who demand the ball on almost every possession. It will start off as a honeymoon, but quickly turn sour, with Wade's attitude. If only Bosh were to join Wade in Miami, it wouldn't help the Heat much, because Bosh has proven that he isn't a game changer. Toronto currently has a better assembly of talent than Miami, and Bosh still couldn't get the team to the playoffs. James should seriously look into Chicago, New York or New Jersey if he wants to leave Cleveland.

NBA Draft Not A Highlight

It is clear that the July 1st is on the minds of every NBA team and fan. The NBA Draft went by last night, and there wasn't anything special to it, other than the fact that the Kentucky Wildcats basketball programs provided five first round draft picks. Even more interesting is G John Wall was the first ever #1 overall pick for the school, which has had a storied history. Wall was taken first by the Washington Wizards, and F Evan Turner was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers. The draft picks following those two didn't seem to spark any interest among viewers.

The most interesting part of the draft is what teams were doing to shed salary. The Chicago Bulls traded G Kirk Hinrich to the Wizards, just for a second-round pick. The Bulls were merely shedding Hinrich's salary so they can acquire two max free agents. The Miami Heat also did the same, trading G Daequan Cook and their first round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Teams seem to be interested in a free agent class that includes F Lebron James, F Chris Bosh, G Dwyane Wade, F Amare Stoudemire, and plenty more.

Another interesting aspect of the draft happened to involve the Portland Trail Blazers. They fired their general manager Kevin Pritchard, but he asked to be in charge of the draft still, and the team allowed him. He proceeded to get rid of F Martell Webster, and there is no telling what Pritchard's intentions were. People are lauding him now for being a class act and handling the firing the right way. We may never know because he won't say it publicly, but he probably was screwing the franchise over.

When it's all said and done, the teams who went out of their way to clear cap space better be significantly better next season. If not, they will have a depleted roster, and will have to re-stock it with below average players. No team wants to be in that position, so a lot of teams are taking a big risk by shedding salary and dumping players.

Bucks Acquire Maggette

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired F Corey Maggette from the Golden State Warriors for C Dan Gadzuric and G Charlie Bell. The Bucks also received a second round draft pick in the deal. Maggette averaged 19.8 points per game in 49 starts and 70 games played. Maggette is reportedly being brought in to provide scoring help to a team that may be losing an important scoring threat. According to ESPN's Chad Ford, Bucks general manager John Hammond says that G John Salmons will opt out of his contract, making it unlikely he'll be back with the Bucks.

The Maggette deal makes sense from the standpoint that it provides offensive help for them. However, Maggette hasn't necessarily made any team better, so this deal may not do anything for the Bucks. If Salmons signs elsewhere, that will be the biggest blow to the Bucks. Salmons provided instant scoring to the Bucks, who were missing G Michael Redd, who has been injury-prone the past couple of seasons. Salmons was also a good defender, playing his position defensively very well after he joined the Bucks.

The Bucks also have to worry about the health of C Andrew Bogut, who suffered a horrible injury to his arm during the regular season. That makes the trade of Gadzuric a little more baffling, but the Bucks will have three draft picks in Thursday's draft. They will definitely pick up a center with one of the three picks. Acquiring Maggette, however, will not do much for their team, so G Brandon Jennings and Bogut will have to shoulder the load in order for them to get back to the playoffs.

Lakers Win 16th Championship

The Los Angeles Lakers have won their 16th championship, beating the Boston Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. It was a struggle for the Lakers, as they fell behind by double digits in the first half and in the second half. NBA Finals MVP G Kobe Bryant only made 6 of his 24 field goal attempts, but it was the offensive rebounding from the Lakers that kept them in it. They grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, the most since the 1996 NBA Finals by one team. Bryant himself had 15 total rebounds, and F Pau Gasol had 18 rebounds to go along with 19 points. Ron Artest had the best game of the series, being very physical with the Celtics and knocking down a big three-pointer with under 2 minutes left. He scored 20.

Bryant said it correctly when he said Game 7 meant nothing to him. All of these players were just going out and trying to get a victory to win the championship. The fact that it was a Game 7 between the Lakers and Celtics had nothing to do with the players. The Lakers/Celtics rivalry was at its best in the 1960s, and no current players even care about what happened then. However, the Lakers did look nervous as Gasol and Bryant missed crucial free throws in the fourth quarter. Also, the Lakers only shot 33% from the field, easily their lowest output of the series.

The Celtics couldn't capitalize, and that could've been because of the absence of C Kendrick Perkins. Also, G Ray Allen just seemed to go cold the rest of the series after his spectacular Game 2 performance, and that doomed the Celtics. F Kevin Garnett scored 17 points, but only grabbed 3 rebounds. That is not going to get it done for the Celtics either. He needed to be way more productive and it didn't happen. This could be the last run for the Celtics, as Allen and F Paul Pierce enters free agency. If both of them leaves, which isn't expected, they will not be seeing the Finals anytime soon.

Izzo May Take Cavs Job

Tom Izzo, head coach of Michigan State University's basketball program, is leaning towards taking the head coaching job of the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources close to the situation say. It was previously thought that Izzo wanted to win another national championship with the Spartans before he entertains NBA jobs. Izzo has recently flew over to Cleveland in Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert's private jet. He toured all of the facilities and met with front office personnel. There is not a guarantee that Izzo will take the job, but sources say he has changed his thinking over the past couple of weeks and is leaning toward the job.

This could be a huge mistake for Izzo if he takes the job soon. There is not guarantee that F Lebron James will re-sign with the Cavaliers. No one knows James thinking at this point, and a Cavaliers team without James will probably be at the bottom of the Eastern Conference again. Izzo can be setting himself up for failure, just as other successful college coaches have done in the past when taking their coaching to the NBA level. Guys like Rick Pitino and John Calipari have enjoyed success at the college level but haven't enjoyed it at the pro level.

James wouldn't necessarily care if Izzo was the coach. James is probably looking for a big splash or looking for a good fit. When the Chicago Bulls hired Tom Thibodeau as their new coach, that wasn't the big splash the Bulls needed to make to convince James to come to Chicago. However, the Bulls have been a playoff team without him, so that might work in their favor. The New York Knicks have Mike D'Antoni, who James liked when they worked together in the 2008 Olympics. When it's all said and done, if Izzo announces he's taking the job soon, he'll be making a mistake.

Ferry Resigns

Danny Ferry, general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has decided to resign from his position, effective immediately. Ferry's contract was up June 30, and instead of renewing the contract, he decided to leave. This becomes another major shakeup for a franchise that has had the most wins in the Eastern Conference the past two seasons. Last month, the Cavaliers fired head coach Mike Brown, shortly after their loss in the playoffs to the Boston Celtics. Assistant general manager Chris Grant will take over as general manager for the Cavaliers.

Ferry decided to depart because he felt that his sense of the team's direction, and owner Dan Gilbert's sense of direction for the team, weren't the same. Ferry was not in agreement with the firing of Brown, and Gilbert looks to hire a defensive-oriented coach again. With superstar F Lebron James heading into free agency next month, these moves can be costly, or they can help bring James back to Cleveland. However, this is the most important offseason in franchise history and Cleveland has to make sure they get their man back.

Gilbert has to find a coach soon, before the free agency period starts. James has to know what direction the Cavs are headed in. Some speculate that the resignation of Ferry could've been what James has wanted. Whatever it is, the Cavs have to do whatever James wants to get him back. If not, Cleveland fans can get used to losing the way they have seen this franchise historically.

Celtics-Lakers Rivalry Overrated

The Boston Celtics will square off with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals for the 12th time in NBA history, and it is getting hype like both teams hate each other and it is a serious rivalry. This is completely blown out of proportion. If you hear any of the Celtics players talk about a certain hate for a Lakers' player, and vice versa, they are lying. Both teams are going into the Finals looking for another championship.

F Kevin Garnett, G Ray Allen, and F Paul Pierce are looking to get another championship ring together, and G Kobe Bryant is simply looking to get his fifth title, which will impressively put him ahead of C Shaquille O'Neal and F Tim Duncan, the two best players of the decade. All four of these players, along with Lakers coach Phil Jackson, love to win, and they do not care about this rivalry.

The rivalry started early in the NBA days. The Celtics faced off with the Lakers seven times from 1959-1969, with the Celtics winning all of the games. That is hardly a rivalry if one team dominates another team. F Magic Johnson and F Larry Bird had their own personal rivalry, going back to the 1979 NCAA National Championship Game between Indiana State and Michigan State. Johnson won that, and was with the Lakers when they beat Bird's Celtics in 1985 and 1987. The Celtics beat the Lakers in 1984 with Bird.

As a matter of fact, the only two victories from the Lakers have been the 1985 and 1987 championships. It has been complete domination from the Celtics, so this should not be a rivalry at all. Bird and Johnson have their own personal rivalry, but no one else has hate for each other. It's simply a basketball game in which all players want to win. These two teams only meet twice a year in the regular season, and it doesn't really get any hype then. So how could it be a rivalry?

The rivalry in baseball between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees is a true rivalry. These two teams face off 19 times a year, with much hype for every single game. Also, these two teams have had memorable matchups in the playoffs. That is a real rivalry. The rivalry in football as of late between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts have been great as well. Both teams have gotten the best of each other, and there is always hype surrounding any matchup between these two teams.

The NBA simply does not have any rivalries today, and that is the reason for the hype surrounding this Finals matchup. This is not a rivalry. Examples of real rivalries have been between the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks in the 1990s. The Knicks also had rivalries with the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat in the 1990s. Recently, the Pacers had a small rivalry with the Detroit Pistons, and the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks have a rivalry now. But the Lakers-Celtics matchup is NOT a rivalry.

Cavs Fire Coach Brown

The Cleveland Cavaliers have decided to fire head coach Mike Brown, after they failed to reach the NBA Finals as a #1 seed for the second straight season. The Cavaliers were thoroughly beaten by the Boston Celtics in the 2nd round, in which superstar F Lebron James looked disinterested the final three games. The Cavaliers have constantly made moves in order to get James what he needs to contend for a championship. However, after James seventh season, he does not have a championship as he enters free agency.

Brown had a very good record for the Cavaliers, but I don't think that proved that he was a good coach. Many basketball analysts credited Brown with the success of the Cavaliers, when he won Coach of the Year last season. The Cavaliers won 66 games that season, but lost to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. There is no telling who the Cavaliers will hire as their next head coach, but it will be difficult because many candidates will probably decide based on whether James returns to the team.

In his time with the Cavaliers, Brown has been one of those coaches who have been "superstar watchers." Brown didn't have to do much with the Cavaliers to be successful. Brown only seemed to remind his team of hustle, and didn't know how to coach X's and O's. The Cavaliers can replace Brown with Tim Floyd, who was horrible with the Chicago Bulls after Michael Jordan retired, and he'll do a good job with James. Time and time again, James has carried a subpar basketball team to great heights. The credit should go to James, and the blame shouldn't go to Brown because he wasn't a good coach to begin with.

Sealy Still Remembered

It's hard to believe that it has been ten years since the untimely death of Minnesota Timberwolves F Malik Sealy. I remember watching the playoffs on NBC when Hannah Storm, now a Sportscenter anchor on ESPN, broke the news. Sealy wasn't a star on the Timberwolves, but he was well beloved in New York City, and his death came as a shock to most basketball fans in New York. Most people wouldn't know Sealy personally, but he has never displayed bad behavior that we know of. As a matter of fact, Sealy showed complete restraint when he was disrespected by radio personality Don Imus more than 15 years ago.

Sealy was good friends with Timberwolves star F Kevin Garnett. Actually, Sealy was driving home from Garnett's birthday party when he was struck head-on by another vehicle that was traveling on the wrong side of the highway. Garnett, usually an emotional individual, showed just how he felt about Sealy in a recent Sportscenter interview about the decade anniversary of the death. Garnett broke down when talking about Sealy.

The more troubling thing was the person who struck Sealy. Souksangouane Phengsene was the guy who was way over the influence of alcohol when he struck Sealy. After doing several years for it, he's been arrested for the same thing on several more occasions. He is currently in the midst of an eight-year prison sentence because of his latest DUI incident, which occurred in 2008.

Sealy, who was a standout at St. John's, was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 1992 NBA Draft. He played two seasons for the Pacers, and then played for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Detroit Pistons for the next four seasons. He then went to the Timberwolves in 1998, and played a couple of seasons before his untimely death at the age of 30. There is a certain connection with basketball players from New York City. Sealy will always be connected to the greats of the city.

Lebron, Cavs Exit

The Cleveland Cavaliers season came to an end last night when they lost to the Boston Celtics 94-85. The Celtics advances to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in the past three seasons, and the future of Cavaliers F Lebron James will be the hot topic of the offseason. James had a triple-double, but also had nine turnovers, and seemed disinterested once again, as the team fell short. The Cavaliers have become the second team in NBA history to have consecutive 60-win seasons without an appearance in the NBA Finals. The 1972 and 1973 Milwaukee Bucks were the other team to do that. The Celtics will play the Orlando Magic in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Semifinals, when the Magic won in seven games en route to the NBA Finals.

The performance from James have raised eyebrows from many NBA fans across the country, and it also leaves people wondering if he wants to be in Cleveland anymore. Even though James did have a good game statistically, he didn't show any interest in putting his team on his back and winning the game in the fourth quarter. He committed many turnovers, and on occasion, deferred to G Mo Williams on running the offense in the fourth quarter, which is unlike James.

This may have been a protest for James, stating that he knows there aren't enough pieces on the team to win a championship. C Shaquille O'Neal also has an uncertain future, and I believe James choice will affect O'Neal. James will have a decision to make. The Chicago Bulls, New Jersey Nets, and New York Knicks will be heavily pursuing James, and there is also the real possibility that he returns to Cleveland. The Cavaliers, under the collective bargaining agreement, can offer James the most money. However, if one of these three teams sign another max free agent player, that might lure James to that team for the possibility of winning a championship. For now, we'll have to enjoy the rest of the NBA playoffs, and then see what happens in the offseason.

Walker Attempting Comeback

University of Louisville basketball head coach Rick Pitino said that F Antoine Walker was working out with some of the college players, and he is attempting a comeback to the NBA. Pitino coached Walker in the 1990s with the University of Kentucky. Walker was a three-time All Star for the Boston Celtics, and won a championship with the Miami Heat in 2006. Walker last played in the NBA during the 2007-2008 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is only 33 years old.

It is known that Walker has heavy financial debts, something that has become too commonplace among NBA players. Walker played professional basketball in Puerto Rico this past year, but wants NBA millions. Walker was accused of writing bad checks to a Las Vegas casino. He agreed to pay them fully. Walker was a part of an Outside the Lines piece about NBA players going into debt. He described his lifestyle, which included many cars and a big entourage. He explains that when he needs them now, they are nowhere to be found.

The best thing to do when you begin making NBA millions is to eliminate your entourage. They aren't there because they are supporting you through your NBA career. They are there to get some of that money, and that can put people in trouble. Pitino says Walker will talk to his players about those dangers, hoping that his life will be a lesson to his players who will eventually go to the NBA.

F Scottie Pippen, who will be inducted into the Basketball Hall-of-Fame this year, is also in heavy financial debt because of bad business deals. When players have NBA millions, they don't have to do much with it. If you're a smart business person, then it'll be logical to turn your money into much more. However, everyone does not have the business smarts, so they should just save their money. Once NBA players retire, they'll be set for life, and their kids will be as well.

Cavs Take Game 1, Hawks Win Series

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics Saturday night in Game 1 of the 2nd round 101-93, after the Celtics held a lead for the majority of the game. F Lebron James didn't look as explosive as he normally does, clearly being bothered by that bum elbow. It was the play of G Mo Williams that sparked the Cavaliers comeback in the 3rd quarter. 14 of Williams 20 points came in that 3rd quarter, which included a dunk over F Paul Pierce that fired him up and the rest of the team. With the Cavs in early control of the series, they'll look to hold on to their home-court advantage in Game 2 on Monday.

The Atlanta Hawks wrapped up their 1st round series against the Milwaukee Bucks with a resounding 95-74 victory. The Bucks had a chance to close out the series at home on Friday night, when they were up 3-2. However, they came with their worst offensive game, only scoring 69 points at home. The Hawks pounced on them early, not giving them any signs of life in Game 7. G Jamal Crawford led the Hawks with 22 points off the bench, and G Brandon Jennings only scored 15 points, but led the Bucks in scoring. The Hawks will now play the Orlando Magic in the 2nd round, which will start on Tuesday.

The Celtics certainly competed with the Cavaliers, to my surprise. However, if James elbow continues to bother him, that could give the Celtics some hope in staying in contention in this series. This series, contrary to what many analysts have said, shouldn't go more than 5 games. The Celtics are no match for the Cavs. For the Hawks/Magic series, the Magic should win that series as well. The Hawks have shown that they are only middle-of-the-pack. The Magic is far superior than the Hawks, and the Hawks' lack of half-court offense will doom them in this series.

For the Celtics, this could be the last competitive run. G Ray Allen and Pierce are free agents after the season, and there's no telling what they'll do. The Celtics do have F Kevin Garnett and G Rajon Rondo, but those guys aren't able to get anywhere without Pierce and Allen. Garnett is also showing signs of slowing down, which would only leave Rondo as the only reliable player. We'll have to see what happens, however, in the future.

Evans Wins Rookie of the Year

Sacramento Kings G Tyreke Evans has won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, beating out G Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and G Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks. Evans had a spectacular rookie year, in which he averaged 20 points a game, to go along with 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds a game. Evans is only the fourth rookie to average at least 20 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds a game in his rookie season. Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, and Lebron James are the other three to do so.

While Evans put up the numbers to win the award, I don't believe he should have won it. I think the award should've gone to the rookie who has had personal success, in addition to team success. Evans and Curry didn't do anything to better their teams, and that was the ultimate goal. The Kings were contending for a while, but fell out of contention around January and February. The Warriors didn't contend at any point this season.

The award should've gone to Jennings. His Bucks are currently in position to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals with a home win against the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow. They are doing this without the services of G Michael Redd and C Andrew Bogut, their two best players. Jennings started off very hot, even scoring 55 points in a game against the Warriors back in November. However, his numbers dipped, and the Bucks dipped a little as well. However, they were able to get back on their feet and made it to the playoffs. Jennings was more deserving.

Mavs, Nuggets On Brink

After the Dallas Mavericks completed a deal with the Washington Wizards to acquire F Caron Butler and C Brendan Haywood, most NBA experts had the Mavericks, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Denver Nuggets as the three best teams in the Western Conference. However, for the Mavericks and the Nuggets, they will need to pull off a huge comeback just to get past the first round. The Mavericks lost to the San Antonio Spurs 92-89 in Game 4 to fall behind 3-1, and the Nuggets fell to the Utah Jazz 117-106 to fall behind 3-1 as well.

The Spurs victory was surprising because the big three were not sharp in Game 4. C Tim Duncan didn't play well on his 34th birthday, only scoring 4 points, after scoring more than 25 in the first three games. G Manu Ginobili and G Tony Parker combined for only 27 points, which usually leaves the Spurs in a bad predicament. However, G George Hill stepped up, scoring 29 points and connecting on 5 of 6 three-point field goal attempts. Game 5 is Tuesday in Dallas. The Spurs will have a chance to eliminate the Mavericks in Dallas then.

The Jazz got contributions from numerous players in their convincing victory over the Nuggets. F Carlos Boozer led them with 31 points, and G Deron Williams chipped in with 24 points. F C.J. Miles scored 21 points and G Wesley Matthews scored 18 points to help out as well. The Nuggets only got contributions from F Carmelo Anthony. He scored 39 points, but committed 9 turnovers. The rest of the Nuggets did not contribute at all, with G Chauncey Billups only scoring 14 points. The Jazz will have a chance to wrap up the series in Denver on Wednesday.

With the Lakers tied 2-2 with the Oklahoma City Thunder as well, the top dogs in the West don't look as convincing as they once were. All three teams have a legit chance of being eliminated in the first round, which will leave the West wide open for anyone to grab. If that scenario were to happen, the most logical choice for a Finals appearance would have to be the Spurs. They already have championship experience, and their bench and their defense has been solid all season. However, we'll have to see what happens in this wild ride that is the NBA Playoffs.

Spoelstra Decides Not To Foul

F Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics gave the Celtics a 3-0 series lead with his game-winning jumper over the Miami Heat to give them a Game 3 road win. The Celtics now have an opportunity to wrap up the series in Miami on Sunday. The big issue, however, was Heat coach Erik Spoelstra's decision to not foul with a foul to give. Spoelstra allowed F Dorell Wright to guard Pierce straight up, where Pierce was able to milk the clock on an isolation play and get off a good shot. Spoelstra has stated that it's on him that the Heat didn't foul.

With a foul to give, Spoelstra should've told his team to foul. That would've disrupted Pierce's ability to milk the clock, and forced the Heat to inbound the ball with less time on the clock. Had Wright fouled Pierce with around 4 seconds to go, the Celtics would've had to inbound the ball again and run another set play with a lot less time on the clock, which would've forced them into a hurried shot.

However, this loss cannot completely be blamed on the Heat's failure to foul in that situation. The Heat played a good game, but they let the Celtics hang around the entire game. At one point, the Celtics were up 8 in the 4th quarter until the Heat made a run. If the Heat were a little sharper on defense, they would've gotten the win.

Now it's a situation of whether the Heat will give up the game in Game 4 and just start their vacations a little earlier. This also might factor into G Dwyane Wade's decision to stay with the Heat beyond next year. The Heat clearly don't have enough on their team to win a championship. It'll be interesting to see where Wade goes next year.

Magic, Spurs Take Game 2

The Orlando Magic beat the Charlotte Bobcats 92-77 in Game 2, in another game that was never really close. The Bobcats started off terribly, only scoring 3 points in the first 8 minutes of the game. During that same time, they committed six turnovers. The Magic were up by 20 at the end of the third quarter. G Stephen Jackson's 27 points was not enough, and the Bobcats have to go back home down 2-0. However, they're going back home to an anticipated electric building that is seeing their franchise in the playoffs for the first time. Charlotte isn't new to the playoffs, as they saw the Charlotte Hornets in the playoff countless times before they moved to New Orleans.

The San Antonio Spurs evened up their series against the Dallas Mavericks by handling them from start to finish. The Mavericks never led in the game, and the Spurs lead was as big as 20 at one point. F Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points, but only connnected on 9 of 24 field goal attempts. C Tim Duncan scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and G Manu Ginobili scored 23 points. F Richard Jefferson broke out of his slump, scoring 17 of his 19 points in the first half. The series now moves to San Antonio, where the Spurs now have home-court advantage.

Obviously, Bobcats coach Larry Brown's message didn't get across to his team. Brown told his team that the Magic were playing around with them in Game 1. The Magic seemed as if they were having fun in Game 2 as well. The Bobcats have to figure out how to effectively guard C Dwight Howard, as C Theo Ratliff and C Nazr Mohammed had problems with him in Game 2. As for the Spurs, I expected this series to be the most competitive series in the playoffs. These two teams are rivals, and both would like to beat the other team.

Mark Cuban sparked new interest in the rivalry by saying that he hated the Spurs. This has probably sparked the Spurs performance in Game 2, as they were solid throughout. The Spurs will be sure to keep their mouths shut, so the Mavericks don't have to look for any bulletin-board material from them. As for the Bobcats/Magic series, this is easily the worst series of the playoffs. Both teams aren't that fun to watch, and it's clear the Bobcats aren't ready for the playoffs. They'll probably learn from this and come back next year with a better idea of how to execute.

Hawks, Celtics, Suns, Lakers Win Game 2

Out of all the Game 2 victories from last night that was of any importance, it was the Phoenix Suns victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Suns lost home-court advantage, so it was important for them to come out strong to get a victory. They did just that, winning 119-90. G Jason Richardson had 29 points, and G Steve Nash had 13 points and 16 assists. F Martell Webster led the Blazers with only 16 points. Game 3 is Thursday night in Portland.

The Boston Celtics made a statement by blowing out the Miami Heat without F Kevin Garnett. Garnett was suspended for Game 2 because of an elbow he threw that connected with Heat F Quentin Richardson in Game 1. The Celtics won 106-77, with big contributions from F Glen Davis and G Ray Allen. G Dwyane Wade was the lone bright spot for the Heat as they head back to Miami down 2-0.

The Atlanta Hawks dominated the Milwaukee Bucks, beating the 96-86 to take a 2-0 series lead to Milwaukee. The Bucks have continued to show they can't generate enough offense without C Andrew Bogut. Coach Scott Skiles has to figure out what's going to work for the Bucks. G Brandon Jennings and G John Salmons has to get their offense going in order to win a game in this series. I don't think the Bucks will win a game, and that's because of the loss of Bogut.

The Los Angeles Lakers escaped with their Game 2 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. F Kevin Durant scored 32 points, and G Russell Westbrook chipped in 19 points. After a lackluster performance in Game 1, G Kobe Bryant scored 39 points to lead the Lakers over the Thunder. C Pau Gasol scored 25 points as well. The Thunder came very close, with F Jeff Green missing the three-pointer as time expired. Game 3 is Thursday night in Oklahoma City, which is sure to be electric.

Cavs, Jazz Get Game 2 Victories

After cruising to a Game 1 victory, the Cleveland Cavaliers had a little trouble getting past the Chicago Bulls in Game 2. However, they were able to get past the Bulls, beating them 112-102. The Cavaliers were carried by F Lebron James 40 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. If there was any game the Bulls were going to steal in Cleveland, it was Game 2. The Bulls made it interesting last year against the Boston Celtics, losing in 7 games. However, this isn't the mediocre Celtics teams without F Kevin Garnett. The Bulls might take Game 3 or Game 4 at home, but the Cavaliers will close them out in Game 5.

The Utah Jazz did what they had to do, despite not having C Mehmet Okur and F Andrei Kirilenko. They beat the Denver Nuggets 114-111, which tied the series at 1. G Deron Williams scored 33 points and dished out 14 assists in the win. While many people think the injury to Okur is terrible for the Jazz, it benefits F Carlos Boozer a lot. He is now able to be a natural forward, instead of being on the block with Okur on the perimeter. However, the Jazz success ultimately depends on Williams, and he got the job done. Now the Nuggets have to go to Utah and win a game. It's possible, but it's going to be hard.

The Cavaliers aren't really playing hard enough against the Bulls because they are the least of their worries. The Cavaliers probably won't have much to worry about in the next round either, having to play either the Boston Celtics or the Miami Heat. They should be able to sweep both of them. The Eastern Conference Finals will be the biggest issue if they play the Orlando Magic again. Meanwhile, the Jazz now have the opportunity to win all of their home games and win the series. I still think the Nuggets will get one back in Utah, and eventually win in 7.

Lakers, Magic, Mavs, Blazers Win Game 1

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder kicked off Sunday's Game 1s, and it wasn't as interesting as people expected. It was a defensive struggle for both teams, as the Lakers came out on top 87-79. G Kobe Bryant and F Kevin Durant, who are both in the top five in scoring, struggled shooting the ball. Bryant had 21 points, on 6 of 19 shooting. Durant was worse, only connecting on 7 of 24 field goals. He finished with 24 points. Game 2 of the series is Tuesday night on TNT.

The Orlando Magic beat the Charlotte Bobcats 98-89 in the their Game 1 matchup. Even though the Magic went to the NBA Finals last year, they did lose Game 1 of their first round matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers last year. They ended up winning that series in six games. G Jameer Nelson scored 24 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, and the Magic held a 22-point lead before almost blowing it. F Gerald Wallace led the Bobcats with 25 points and 17 rebounds. Game 2 is Wednesday night on TNT.

In what probably was the most interesting game and series of the day, the Dallas Mavericks beat the San Antonio Spurs 100-94. F Dirk Nowitzki was unconscious on the floor, scoring 36 points on 12 of 14 shooting. F Caron Butler contributed 22 points and G Jason Kidd scored 13 points and dished out 11 assists. C Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 27 points, and G Manu Ginobili scored 26 points. G Tony Parker scored 18 points off the bench. Game 2 is Wednesday night on TNT.

The last game of the night saw the first road team in the playoffs get a victory. The Portland Trail Blazers beat the Phoenix Suns on the road 105-100 to steal home-court from the Suns. The Trail Blazers are playing without star G Brandon Roy, who underwent surgery earlier in the week for a torn meniscus. G Andre Miller stepped up and scored 31 points, and F LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points in the win. G Jerryd Bayless scored 18 points off the bench to help the Blazers to victory. G Steve Nash led the Suns with 25 points, and F Amare Stoudemire scored 18 points in the loss. Game 2 is Tuesday night on NBA TV.

All of the Game 1s on Sunday were close, which gives hope to the losing team. The Trail Blazers certainly benefited for being the #6 seed and playing the Suns because the Suns aren't that strong of a team. The Trail Blazers have a legit chance of winning this series. The Spurs also have a legit chance of winning, but that hinges on the bench play. However, the Spurs have arguably the toughest matchup in the Western Conference playing a deep Mavericks team. This series could go the distance.

Cavs, Hawks, Celtics, Nuggets Win

The first day of the NBA Playoffs was kicked off with the Cleveland Cavaliers beating the Chicago Bulls 96-83. The Atlanta Hawks proceeded to take care of business against the Milwaukee Bucks in the next game, beating them 102-92 in the next game. The Boston Celtics overcame a big deficit to beat the Miami Heat in a game with testy exchanges. The Denver Nuggets capped off the night by beating the Utah Jazz 126-113.

The Cavaliers were certainly supposed to win this game, and they are expected to sweep the Bulls. However, the Bulls did show a little fight, falling far behind but cutting the huge deficit to 7 at one point. Game 2 of that series is on Monday night. The Hawks and the Bucks seemed more lopsided than what I thought, but it's clear the Bucks are going to struggle to find points with the absence of C Andrew Bogut. G Brandon Jennings did a great job of stepping up, scoring 34 points in the loss. Game 2 of that series is Tuesday.

The Celtics victory over the Heat was the most talked about game of the day, mainly because of what took place during the final minute of the game. F Kevin Garnett and F Quentin Richardson got into a testy exchange, with Garnett sending an elbow to Richardson's face. Garnett was immediately ejected for the incident. F Glen Davis, C Jermaine O'Neal and F Udonis Haslem among others was also involved. F Paul Pierce injured his arm on the play when everything occurred. Game 2 of this heated series is Tuesday.

The Nuggets and Jazz were pretty even throughout the entire game, but the Nuggets took control late and never looked back. The big blow came in the first half, when Jazz C Mehmet Okur left the game with an apparent Achilles injury. He didn't return to the game and his status for the playoffs was left in question afterwards. F Carmelo Anthony scored 42 points in the win. Both teams square off for Game 2 on Monday.

NBA Playoffs Start Today

The NBA Playoffs start today, with four games coming on today and four games coming on tomorrow. The playoffs will kick off with a matchup between the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC. The Cavaliers are the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference and have the best record in the NBA. The next three games, which are on ESPN, are between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Boston Celtics, and Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets.

The playoffs will continue on ABC and TNT tomorrow with four more games, with three of them coming from the Western Conference. Tomorrow's slate of games kicks off with the Oklahoma City Thunder facing the Los Angeles Lakers on ABC. The Lakers are the #1 seed in the Western Conference. The next three games on TNT are matchups between the Charlotte Bobcats, making the playoffs for the first time ever, and the Orlando Magic. The San Antonio Spurs will face the Dallas Mavericks, and the Portland Trail Blazers will face the Phoenix Suns.

Clearly, the more interesting matchups are coming from the Western Conference. With the exception of the Trail Blazers/Suns matchup, all Western Conference matchups are must watches. One series in the Eastern Conference I'll be watching is the matchup between the Bucks and the Hawks. The Bobcats/Magic series may be interesting as well, depending on the Magic's three-point shooting. The Celtics should trash the Heat, and the Cavaliers should do the same to the Bulls. The Celtics aren't that good anymore, but they were blessed with a matchup against the Heat, who have no one but Dwyane Wade on their team.

The only first round upset that I could predict are the Spurs beating the Mavericks and the Jazz beating the Nuggets. Although that isn't likely, the Spurs have been very impressive with the teams they've beaten late in the season. The Mavericks also struggled a bit after their 13-game winning streak was snapped in March. The Jazz are also a tough challenge for the Nuggets, especially with George Karl most likely not being there. The Nuggets weren't really impressive late in the season, but the Jazz haven't been impressive on the road. That will be a matchup to watch out for.
